Pool deck coating colors and textures

30 colors, photographed from the sample boards we hand you at the estimate.

On a pool deck the texture matters as much as the color. A cool deck or knockdown finish does two jobs at once: it reflects heat so the deck stays walkable barefoot in an Inland Empire summer, and it gives the surface enough tooth to stay non-slip when it is wet.

These samples are photographed outdoors on real concrete, in daylight, because that is the only way to judge a deck color honestly. A tan that looks warm indoors can read washed-out in full sun.

Choosing a deck color and texture

Light beats dark on a pool deck, and not by a small margin. Sand, tan and light gray stay meaningfully cooler underfoot than a dark surface in direct sun — the difference is the difference between walking barefoot and hopping to the nearest towel. If the deck faces afternoon sun, this decides the color before taste does.

Texture is the other half. A heavier knockdown gives more grip and more heat reflection but is rougher on bare feet and slightly harder to sweep. A finer texture is smoother underfoot and still non-slip. We bring both and you stand on them.

A darker border or score line against a light field is the usual way to get contrast without heating the deck up — the field stays cool and the edge does the visual work.

Pool Deck Coating Colors

Pool deck coating colors and textures, questions

Which pool deck color stays coolest?

The lightest ones. Sand, tan and the pale grays reflect the most sunlight and stay noticeably cooler underfoot than mid or dark tones. A textured surface also runs cooler than a smooth one, because less of it is touching your foot at any moment.

Is a textured deck coating slippery when wet?

No — texture is what stops it being slippery. A smooth sealed slab is the dangerous surface around a pool. The knockdown and texture finishes here are specified precisely so the deck has grip with water on it.

Can you coat over an existing pool deck?

In most cases yes. A sound slab with surface wear is an ideal candidate — that is what resurfacing is for. Cracking that is still moving, or a slab that has lifted, needs addressing first, and we will say so at the estimate rather than coating over it.
